The Purpose of the Award is to honor pioneer foremothers and those sites that
preserve her heritage through history and biographies.
While the Award is for foremothers, certainly forefathers will be considered.
Clarissa was one of the original converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She migrated to Utah with her husband Samuel Alger and children. Her life was one of hardship. She was the mother of ten children, two having died in infancy. In a years time, on the trek from New York by foot and covered wagon, she lost to death her mother, three brothers and nieces and nephews. Six of her children (and unknown grandchildren) did not accompany the family the rest of the way West from Missouri. In December 1850, Clarissa and Samuel moved from Salt Lake City to help settle the area that is now Parowan, Iron, Utah. To date, I have found no picture of her.
One daughter, Clarissa Alger Whitney and one son, my ancestor, John Alger, were the two children who moved to Utah. John went to Missouri in the 1860s on a church mission and returned to Utah with his brother Thomas' widow and her children. Another son, Alvah also returned to Utah at that time. It is not known whether Clarissa ever saw the remainder of her children again.
