Nelson Pickett, one of the earliest settlers of this county, died at his home near Woodford, Thursday, June 2, aged 80 years 7 months and 4 days.
He had lived in the neighborhood in which he died nearly all his life, coming there from Nauvoo, Ill., with his parents about the time the Mormons moved from Nauvoo to Salt Lake City. In fact his father had belonged to the Mormons who had demanded that he turn his property over to the Church. This he refused to do and with his family fled from them coming north until he reached the vicinity of where Woodford now stands. He settled there and others of his relatives came from the east and for many years the neighborhood was called the "Pickett Settlement."
He was married to Miss Huldah Pinkham in about the year 1853, to them eleven children were born, and we believe ten are now living. He was a veteran of the civil war where he served his country with credit as a soldier
and a patriot.
His wife was very ill at the time of his death and it is thought she cannot last long.
Rev. Hintz, of Browntown, conducted the funeral services at the house on Sunday and the remains were buried in the old cemetery at Argyle.
