Florence McMullin Jensen

1890-1984

(written prior to her death in July 1984)

Florence McMullin was born 06 February 1890 at St. George, Washington, Utah. She was the first child of George Wesley McMullin and Florence Oakden.

Many stories are told by members of the family of the McMullins as to how the Indians made raids on the white families in that area. Grandma McMullin told how Geronimo, the Great Indian Chief, would come to her home and alert the family when the raids were to be held. She always befriended the Indians with meals and food for their kindness.

Florence’s father, George Wesley, died when Florence was eight years old, leaving her Mother a widow with four small children and she was pregnant with the sixth child. She left St. George in a covered wagon with her little family alone and came to Cleveland, Utah. There she lived and reared and raised her family until she died at nearly 87 years of age.

It was at Cleveland that Florence met her future husband, Wilford Ray Jensen. By this time her Mother had remarried Thomas Davis. When Florence and Wilford were married they had a double wedding with Wilford’s Uncle Sanford Larsen and Florence’s new stepsister, Sarah Davis. They were wed on 03 November 1909 at Cleveland. On their 50th wedding anniversary all four of them were reunited and celebrated with the families.

Florence and Wilford had five sons: Carroll, Wesley, Otho, Claude, and Dale. Otho died when he was two years old. Wesley married Elaine Jones in 1940 and had three sons. Wesley passed away in March 1979. Carroll married Frances (Davis) Averett and lives in Cleveland. Claude married Ruth Young and has three daughters and lives in Price. Dale married Donna Norton and has two sons and a daughter and lives in Wellington, Utah.

Florence and Wilford lived most of their lives in Cleveland, Utah. When they were getting up in their ages, they then left and moved to Price. Their heart was always in Cleveland. That was where they wished to be buried and remain. Wilford died in 1970.

Florence is still alive and very active for 90 years old. She still loves to quilt and tie quilts. In the last six months she has quilted 9 baby quilts by herself.

Florence sent two of her sons to the Second World War (Carroll and Dale). She has seen three grandsons serve missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Brent, son of Wesley and Elaine; and Fred and Randy sons of Dale and Donna. All the boys will always remember how each week they received letters and financial help from their grandparents. They cannot recall missing one week in the two years calling.

Florence will always be remembered by her daily diaries. She kept them for the past 50 or 60 years, up until the last few years. Many of the older Cleveland people would very often refer to her diary for information that was essential. She catalogued many important events for the community. Florence is in fairly good health at the present time, and still never misses her Relief Society Meeting and Sunday School.
