Robert James
and Gertrude Estell Sherman Gordon
Robert was born 5 Jul
1872 in St. Johns, Tooele, Utah to Robert and Agnes Catherine Davis
Gordon.
Gertrude was born 18
Oct 1874 in
Fountain Green, Utah to Albey Lyman and Mary Swan Sherman.
Father and Mother
were married 18 Oct 1894.
Father’s sister, Agnes and Mother’s brother, Lionel were
married at the same time. Father and
Mother were the parents of ten children.
They raised eight to adulthood:
Estell,
Corean, Don, Vaughn, Luella, Florence, Edna, Ellis, Pearl and Merl.
Father’s family
moved to Huntington in 1884.
They lived in dugouts until they could build a house. Father played the violin for dances and
programs.
In May 1904 Father
took his family to Idaho. He
worked in the beet fields until he became very ill and his father came and
brought them home. Father was a
farmer. He went to Millerton Ranch and
was foreman for two years. We then went
to Wattis when it first opened up. He
had two teams and wagons. His sons Don
and Vaughn worked
driving the wagons, hauling freight and building roads. Father worked in the store; there was a pool
hall in the back. We moved to Huntington and Dad contracted to build two miles of
road up Huntington Canyon.
He hauled freight from Huntington to Duchesne and back. He worked in Hiawatha in the coal mine.
Mother’s Father
was called to help settle Huntington.
They moved there in 1880.
They, of course, used wagons.
Seven of the children had to take turns walking. There was no room in the wagons. They were loaded with belongings and food
supplies. As the children walked they
drove the cows.
Mother gave
readings, sang in public and played the Jews Harp. She was a Visiting Teacher for the Relief
Society for forty-six years.
We lived in Buffalo for two years. The children went to Lawrence to school. We moved to Huntington and lived there where we all went to
school. Dad raised good crops and a
large vegetable garden. We had horses,
cows and chickens. Dad passed away 29 July
1936.
Mother visited her
children in Omaha, Nebraska, Tacoma, Washington, and Ely, Nevada.
She spent her last two years in Cleveland, Utah.
She passed away 12 Sept 1962.
